(SPOILERS AHEAD!)
Directed by Joachim Rønning, Tron: Ares is the third film in Disney’s Tron franchise. Jared Leto plays Ares, a Master Control program, that enters the real world seeking a “permanence code”, computer code that will prevent him from “dying” all the time. Also looking for that code is Eve Kim, played by Greta Lee, a human CEO who wants to spend time again with her sister (also a human CEO) who died from cancer.
On their tail is Athena, played by Jodie Turner-Smith, a program sent by Julian Dillinger, played by Evan Peters, the CEO of Eve’s rival company. Rounding off the cast, we have Gillian Anderson, Hasan Minhaj, Arturo Castro, and Jeff Bridges in a minor role.
While I am a fan of the first two Tron films, I wasn’t a fan of this one. I think my biggest issue with the film was how it mostly took place in the real world. The real world and its characters are boring; I much prefer the computer world of Tron! Instead we get a movie that felt like a long chase sequence!
There were also plot points that bugged me. Like, it’s shocking how quickly Eve figures out that Ares is a program and not a human being! Like, there’s literally no logical way for her to have come to that conclusion as quickly as she does in the film! And we don’t really get any payoff at the end of the film regarding Eve and her sister. Also, Tron doesn’t even appear in this Tron film! What’s the point of that?
Was there anything about the film that I liked? Well, the best thing, by far, was the visuals! They felt like the Tron visuals we know and love, but updated for 2025!
I also thought none of the acting was bad, per se. Everyone felt like they were giving the performance they should have given. Maybe Hasan Minhaj’s performance felt like he was stretching a bit, but it wasn’t anything crazy.
All in all, I’m not a fan of this film, but I know a few people who love this one the most. So, decide for yourself.
So, my final score for this film is 23/35 = 65.71% (D) !
