(SPOILERS AHEAD!)
I don’t know which is more obscure: the animated Disney’s Mickey, Donald, Goofy: The Three Musketeers from 2004 or the live-action The Three Musketeers from 1993. Today, we’re looking at the latter.
Directed by Stephen Herek and written by David Loughery, The Three Musketeers is a loose adaptation of the novel by Alexandre Dumas, replacing every French accent with American or British ones. The main musketeers themselves are played by Kiefer Sutherland, Charlie Sheen, Oliver Platt, and Chris O’Donnell, and while their performances aren’t bad, their accents are distractingly from the New World!
The best performance by far was that of Tim Curry, who plays a depraved, corrupt Cardinal and his performance is deliciously evil as one would expect. The weakest performances were probably by Hugh O’Conor and Gabrielle Anwar, who play King Louis XIII and Queen Anne, respectively. Rebecca De Mornay and Michael Wincott round up the cast.
The best things in the film though were the production design, costuming, and sceneries! This movie gave off vibes as to how Pirates of the Caribbean might have looked like had it been made in the ’90s!
One thing that took me aback was that it surprisingly had more adult content than I expected for a Disney film; had it been released today, it would definitely have gotten a PG-13 rating!
That point aside, the film was an enjoyable romp and makes me wonder why they never made sequels; the film was a box office hit, after all! Maybe one day, they’ll return to it. Until then, remember all for one and one for all!
So, my final score for this film is 30/35 = 85.71% (B) !
