Return to Oz (1985)

I haven't seen it, but I know it ain't as cheerful as this cover is portraying it to be!

(If this is your first time on this blog, I ask you to read my “About” page first! You can find a link to it at the top left-hand corner of this blog. Thanks!)

MGM’s “The Wizard of Oz” was a musical film that became a classic! It’s been loved and adored by children and families alike for generations. The songs have been instilled into modern culture as well as the characters. Hence it wasn’t long before other film adaptations based on the books were made in an effort to capture the success that “The Wizard of Oz” brought.

The Disney company was also among those who got into the action. Last year, for example, they released a film intended to be a prequel to “The Wizard of Oz” called, “Oz: The Great and Powerful”. I thought it was quite good and you can find my review of it here.

But in 1985, Disney make a “sequel” to the classic film entitled “Return to Oz”. It would be nothing like the original film in terms of tone and would instead be a quite dark and macabre tale bereft of songs and musical numbers. Most likely due to this change in tone, the film was a box office flop, but managed to gain a cult following over the years.

So is the film bad or good? Let’s find out on the yellow brick road of reviewing! Ha, see what I did there? Yellow brick road of re….umm…ok…moving on!

It can be argued that the “The Sorcerer’s Apprentice” segment of Disney’s “Fantasia” is the most famous segment of the film. Everyone just enjoys seeing Mickey in his wizard’s hat trying to find the easy way out of doing work by creating chaos of epic proportions!

Hence, it wasn’t long before someone decided to make a full-length feature film based on that segment. And as you can imagine, the resulting film had nigh NOTHING whatsoever to do with the original segment. But is the film worth ignoring totally? Or can we still find some enjoyment from this wizard’s tale featuring Nicolas Cage? Well, let’s find out!

The Sword and the Rose (1953)

During Disney’s early years of live-action films, there were a few English-oriented ones. By English-oriented, I mean films that took place and/or were based on events from England’s history or folklore. One such example is the film, “The Sword and the Rose”, a film about Mary Tudor, the sister of King Henry VIII.

Does Disney manage to tell this story truly with no embellishment or fabrication whatsoever? Of course not! With that said, let’s dive into “The Sword and the Rose”.

Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time (2010)

Making movies based on video games is nothing new. It’s been done in America since “Super Mario Bros.” was released in 1993. Sadly though, that film was not a hit! In 2012, Disney Animation would make a film based on the idea of video games entitled, “Wreck-It Ralph”. Thankfully, this film was a hit!

But this wasn’t Disney’s first time making a film based on video games. Oh no, they’ve done it before. In 2010, for example, they made a live-action adaptation of a popular video game series entitled “Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time”. So the question is, does this follow the “Wreck-It Ralph” route to greatness or the “Super Mario Bros.” route to badness and forgettability? Well, you’ll just have to wait until the end of the review to find out (*coughs* “Super Mario Bros.” *coughs*).

What’s one way to make an enjoyable, magical classic? Well, take the magic and charm of Ireland, throw in a simple yet investing story, and add in wonderful actors including a future James Bond and within one box office weekend, you’ve got yourself a masterpiece! And our film today pretty much follows this formula. So without further ado, let’s sit back and review “Darby O’Gill and the Little People”

With the success of the first film, it wasn’t long before a sequel to “Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl” was made. The film was a huge box-office hit, grossing over a billion dollars worldwide. Is it as good as the first? No.

"I mean...dudette."

This film suffers from an incredibly complicated combination of plots as well as a very long running time. Yet, I still have to review it. Here’s the review of “Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man’s Chest”.

Further Delay

I sincerely apologize to all of you, but this week is the last week of final exams for me, so I’ve been really busy studying for them. Because of that, I won’t be able to keep my promise to have the next review posted tomorrow, but I hopefully will have it posted before the end of the week (Wednesday is a good estimate).

Again, I apologize for any and all inconvenience this may or may not have caused (then again if this didn’t cause any inconvenience, should I still apologize? Hmm…the mind wanders….problems….solutions….mathematics….chocolate bars….I’ve clearly been studying too much)!

Changing From Every Week to Every Other Week

Hello readers,

Well, when I started this blog, I said that I’d update it every week with a new review unless life got busy. In that case, I’d switch it to every other week. Well, life got busy with schoolwork and other priorities and I’m not pleased with the quality of my recent reviews, so I’ll be updating this blog every other week from now on. Sorry for any inconveniences!

So, the next review will be posted hopefully on November 25th.
